Buccal Swab Collection Instructions
Before Collection: Avoid eating, drinking, chewing gum, or brushing your teeth for at least 30 minutes before collecting your sample. This helps ensure that the sample is uncontaminated.
With your dominant hand, gently rub the inside of your cheek in a circular motion for 30 seconds. This action helps to loosen cheek cells and increases the number of cells that will be collected.
Take a buccal swab, hold the handle (not the tip). Open the mouth, place the cotton tip against inside of the cheek. Gently rub and scrape both sides of the cheek for 15-30 seconds while rotating the swab, making sure to collect sufficient cells.
Allow the swab to air-dry after collection (~10 min), seal in the collection tube (bag), then proceed to the DNA extraction procedure. Or place the swab into the protection buffer, store at room temperature no more than two days before proceeding DNA extraction.
